Technology Readiness Level 7 Achievement

VAARHeT platform successfully deployed in operational environment at Āraiši Ezerpils Archaeological Park engaging authentic museum visitor populations in supervised validation testing, achieving Technology Readiness Level 7 status defined as system prototype demonstration in intended operational context rather than laboratory or controlled testing environments. Progression from laboratory validation (TRL 4-5) to operational environment deployment establishes foundation for commercial platform development with confidence that core value propositions validated through rigorous assessment with target user populations rather than merely demonstrating technical feasibility through researcher or early-adopter testing potentially unrepresentative of mainstream heritage visitor demographics and institutional operational constraints. Achievement positions platform substantially ahead of typical research proof-of-concept demonstrations remaining at early TRL stages without real-world deployment evidence, enabling investment discussions and partnership development supported by validated performance metrics and quantified user feedback from representative heritage sector stakeholders rather than purely aspirational projections about potential adoption and value delivery lacking empirical operational validation. TRL 7 milestone represents successful EU cascade funding outcome demonstrating public research investment catalysing commercially viable innovation with sustained impact potential beyond initial grant period, validating funding mechanism effectiveness for bridging research capability and market deployment gap that neither academic institutions nor commercial vendors adequately address independently.

Operational Deployment Characteristics and Institutional Integration

Operational validation occurred during normal Āraiši museum hours from 14-16 July 2025 within authentic visitor spaces including indoor exhibition areas and climate-controlled rooms accommodating VR testing, engaging actual visitor populations recruited from museum networks rather than convenience sampling from researchers or technology enthusiasts. Museum staff operated equipment, facilitated testing sessions, and provided first-line visitor support alongside XR Ireland personnel, building institutional capability for sustained technology operation beyond external consultant dependency whilst validating that heritage professionals without specialised technical training could successfully manage applications, troubleshoot common issues, and assist visitors encountering difficulties. Equipment deployment including Meta Quest 3 VR headsets, Samsung mobile devices, and ActiveLook AR wearables remained on-site throughout validation period integrated within museum operational workflows, experiencing real environmental conditions including temperature variation, humidity from lakeside location, ambient noise from concurrent museum activities, and spatial constraints in actual exhibition facilities rather than purpose-built testing rooms with idealised conditions. This authentic operational context testing revealed deployment considerations that laboratory evaluation would miss including hygiene protocols for shared VR headsets between visitors, equipment charging and storage logistics, interference patterns from concurrent user sessions, and visitor throughput constraints from session duration limitations, generating insights about institutional operational requirements beyond pure technical performance or user satisfaction measurement.

Commercial Development Confidence and Investment Readiness

TRL 7 achievement provides evidence foundation enabling confident commercial platform development discussions with potential investors, strategic partners, and early adopter customers requiring validation beyond concept demonstrations or pilot enthusiasm potentially influenced by novelty rather than sustained operational value. Quantified outcomes including System Usability Scale scores, Net Promoter Scores, added value ratings, task completion metrics, and performance latency measurements from representative user populations provide concrete assessment replacing speculative projections about potential adoption with empirical evidence about actual reception, identifying strengths meriting continued investment and limitations requiring resolution before mainstream deployment viability. Institutional validation at operational museum environment demonstrates deployment feasibility within real heritage organisation workflows, budget constraints, staff capability levels, and visitor service integration requirements, addressing concerns that technology might prove viable in controlled research contexts yet impractical when confronted with authentic institutional operational complexity, resource limitations, and competing priorities that museums navigate daily. This operational evidence strengthens Culturama Platform business case supporting investment attraction, partnership negotiation, and customer acquisition conversations grounded in demonstrated capability rather than unproven potential, whilst informing realistic development roadmap, pricing strategy, and support requirements based on observed institutional needs and user patterns rather than assumptions potentially diverging from operational reality that sustained commercial success requires accommodating.
